In our latest episode of Real Talk With Outperformers, Brad chats with Australian, 6 time Red Bull Cliff Diving champion, Rhiannan Iffland about her extraordinary sport, what started her interest in competing and the legacy she wants to be remembered for.

Here are some of the podcast highlights;

Diving for more

Rhiannan started diving from the age of 9 years old and realised that she was pretty good well into her teens. After a few years, she realised that she wanted something more than the same routine and training each and every week. She says that always being on the verge of making the Olympic team, the repetitiveness and the grind, instigated her desire to do something more with her diving skills and so she began Cliff Diving.

Pushing the limits

Recognising that Cliff Diving, was the fresh start that she needed at the time to reignite her passion, Rhiannan says “I felt like I was pushing the limits but for myself. It was way more exciting and I need that”.

Discipline in diving

When talking about the discipline and the certain amount of loneliness that comes with competing in an individual sport, Rhiannan is appreciative of all her training with a coach but loves the solitude and gratification that comes with a completing a dive from extraordinary heights on her own.

Rhiannan says she’s better in execution and competing than she is in training or in the lead up to a competition. She says the commitment and discipline is there when she’s standing at the edge of the platform not when warming up or practicing for an event.

Perceiving Heights

The height for Cliff Diving is not for the faint hearted, 26-28 meters above the water and Rhiannan describes how sometimes the height can feel or look different depending on the location. She says that open spaces seem to reduce the height whilst more enclosed venues make it look and feel higher.

Competitiveness and Holding On

Rhiannan won her first championship in her first year in the Red Bull Cliff Diving Series in 2016. And whilst a feather in her cap, Rhiannan says that at times having the target on your back as the person to beat is not easy however her passion to hold onto the title is a consistent driving force in her performance.

Women and age limits in Cliff Diving

When asked by Brad what are the factors that influence her to keep pushing, Rhiannan says at the top of her list is the young females who are entering the series to compete against her. Which funnily enough are the same crowd she dedicates time to encourage their participation in the sport.

“It’s a game of cat and mouse” Rhiannan says about her position in the sport and reaching the time limit of the sport. Although it’s at the back of her mind, it’s also another way she encourages herself to keep pushing and to leave her mark in the competition.

Overcoming Fear

When asked by Brad what young aspiring athletes are talking to Rhiannan about, she says that it’s mostly around dealing with fear and her advice is usually “It’s a marathon not a sprint” and to enjoy the journey. She believes she found her ‘success’ when she started Cliff Diving and enjoying her time competing in the sport.

What’s important to you?

One of the final questions asked to Rhianna was; what’s important to you? Rhiannan replied that she wants to be remembered for being a good sport, a good human being and known as someone who enjoyed what they did.
